lookin' up

We went to Jim Thorpe last weekend. We rode the train and hiked through the gorge. It was a lot of fun.

One of the kids, who's name I will not mention, had severe gastrointestinal issues that caused us many trips to the potty. But other than that it was fun!

The the views were beautiful! and the day was perfect.

Of course the boys had to throw some rocks in the river. The rocks were plentiful!

We got some bulking from the teenager because I'm sure she's never hiked through the rocky crags of mountainous terrain. Well, it wasn't really that mountainous but for us it was!

But when we got to where we were going she understood the adventure. I only got this pic on my camera as it began to die. There were better areas of the falls to shoot a picture but I couldn't get the camera to work. There was a climb farther up the water fall but there was no way we could get Asher up there. And Arielle is somewhat unbalanced for some reason. Until we know exactly why, we opted out on that climb.

I like this shot :) Her smile is so beautiful!

Then we decided to stop at Penn's Landing on the way home to catch the fireworks...bad idea!
We had to parked 100 miles(I'm exaggerating but it felt like 100!) away and had to hike through a mass of hot sweaty people and the kids were so hungry by the time we got there. We paid an arm and a leg for both food and parking! Saw about 15 minutes of fireworks! Then hiked about 100 miles back through the same mass of sweaty people to our car with 3 grumpy tired kids, one who had to poop again and one who I carried about 5/6 blocks because he was fading fast...and he's a load! My Doodle boy is no baby anymore! Ugg, my back still hurts!

The gastro kid got the most irritable and by the time we got home was horribly overloaded with "feelings"....so we had to spend sometime trying to discuss "maturity" before bed. After that all was well... I have no pictures, my battery died at the gorge...

We also "camped out" in our yard on the 4th. We didn't actually camp but we did build a fire, toasted marshmallows and caught lighting bugs(fireflies to you southerners ;).
They really got into the bug hunt and it was highly competitive!  Who do you think caught the most bugs?
We made bug jars to put the lightening bugs in :)

Don't worry, the next day all the "captives" were set free...we only killed one accidentally. God forgives us.
The kids had a lot of fun. Simple, and we didn't spend a penny; my kind of entertainment =P

Oh, and Arielle caught the most bugs but shared with the boys so they could have some too! Good girl!

Next post is about the beach. Arielle was hilarious!

3 Lessons learned from the weekend
1. stay out of Philadelphia on 4th of July weekend
2. make sure gastro kid does not eat foods that irritate bowel before a car trip
3. Sometimes less is best!
